Summer Market Starts Sunday, May 4

Sunday, Sunday, SUNDAY – the day you’ve all been waiting for, the opening of the summer farmers market in Westover.  Market regulars (hardy souls) have been enjoying a range of products over the winter, but soon the bounty of summer harvest will be arriving in the expanded summer market.

Beginning this Sunday, 28 vendors will be offering you a wide range of delights. In addition to those that you know and love, we welcome a few new vendors this summer, including Whim Pop, Balsamo’s Family Kitchen, and Wilhoit’s Roasted Nuts.  They join a vendor lineup sure to satisfy your needs and desires.

The summer market runs for 8 am to 12 pm (instead of our 9 am – 1 pm winter hours).  Please remember that the summer market spills on to N. McKinley St, in addition to occupying the plaza in front of the library.  During market hours, McKinley will be closed to southbound traffic at the library parking lot, while northbound traffic from Washington Blvd. is directed into the parking lot behind the Westover Shopping Center (which is reserved for patrons of those shops).

Have a few spare hours on Sunday mornings and interested in helping out? We welcome volunteers to help set-up and staff the market.  More information here.

See you at the market.

April Happenings at WFM

April looks to be a busy month for the Westover Farmers Market as we count down to the summer market that will kick off on May 4.

First, this Sunday we welcome our newest vendor, Caprikorn Farms, purveyors of all manner of fine goat cheese.  Just say yum.

Second, please note that WFM will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 20.  We advise you stock up accordingly on April 13.  We assume there will be a run on eggs.

Finally, kudos to all WFM patrons who braved the icky weather last Sunday.  Our vendors certainly appreciated it and so did we.

Return of the Pickle People

Number 1 Sons, purveyors of all things pickled, have been getting some good buzz lately – you can check out their profile in the Washington Times.  After some time off this winter, hopefully tinkering with recipes for new krauts and kimchees, the Westover Farmers Market is pleased to welcome them back to the market beginning this Sunday, March 30.  Come get your pickles, people.

Spring Hopes Eternal

Ok, so notwithstanding today’s weather, there have been relatively few signs that this infernal winter will finally give way to our well-deserved spring.  A snowy St. Patrick’s day?!  This means of course that the summer bounty we dream about will have to wait a bit longer yet.  But in case you haven’t been down to the WFM lately, you’ve been missing out on a variety of fresh greens and root vegetables, fruits, jams and honeys, baked goods, meats, chocolates, and much much more.  So if you need help giving the winter blues a good kick in the pants, come down to WFM tomorrow from 9-1 to stock up on the good stuff and commiserate with neighbors.

February 16 – No Market

On account of the massive piles of snow lingering in the market area, there will be no market tomorrow, February 16.  See you next week.

Thaw Out at WFM Tomorrow

Emerging from hibernation and need to re-stock?  Come enjoy the mid-winter respite tomorrow (highs above freezing!), catch up with your favorite vendors, and enjoy some delectable produce, bread, meats, chocolates…and much much more.  Bring your neighbors!  The winter market is open from 9 to 1 on Sundays.

First 2014 Market Tomorrow

Ok, so its a little bit arctic, but that shouldn’t stop you, oh intrepid patrons of the Westover Farmers Market, from joining us for the first market of 2014.  We have plenty of options to keep you warm.  Need some honey to go in your warm winter tea?  Tomorrow we welcome for the first time Bees ‘n Blossoms, who will be offering some excellent wild honey collected by their herd of bees in the fruit orchards and berry patches around Virginia.  Or perhaps some piping hot Peruvian-style fried chicken from Rub ‘n Roost?  Just two of our favorites sure to warm hearts and tummies on a cold January Sunday.  See you at the market!

Holiday Pause: No Market December 29

Friends of WFM: we wish you happy and healthy holidays and a 2014 of bounty and prosper.  After a break for the holidays on December 29th, the WFM will return per usual winter hours on January 5th.  See you in the new year!
